Big data analysis in healthcare workshop accomplished in Beijing

As a kick start to the new calendar year, The George Institute, China held a ‘big data analysis in healthcare workshop’ on 2 January 2018. The aim was to facilitate new ideas and modes of cooperation and development in healthcare arena through open dialogue and sharing of experiences in the application of the new analytics of big data in various fields. By integrating new and existing data resources, we hope to create opportunities for research to improve the quality and outcomes of healthcare services in China and other countries. Experts and scholars from a wide range of disciplines covering public health, epidemiology, biomedical engineering and clinical medicine, participated in the workshop.

With the continuous promotion of “Healthy China 2030”, big data in healthcare has rapidly developed into a new generation of technologies with applications to a range of health care services. With the continuous popularization of networks and information technologies, the amount of data generated is growing exponentially, which directly creates an era of big data analytics that allow assessment of a range of datasets beyond the capabilities of existing technologies.

Professor Craig Anderson, Executive Director of The George Institute, China, spoke highly of the significance of this workshop during his opening remarks. He emphasized the fundamental strategic positioning of big data that promises to deepen our understanding of the causes of ill health and adverse health outcomes. Medical research has an opportunity to lay a solid foundation for big data health analytics.

Aming at improving the health of millions of people around the world, The George Institute for Global Health is dedicated to driving improvements in global health systems and strategy. For example, big data can allow development of models that use ECG signals to predict the occurence of acute MI, or who is at high risk of falls among a community of older people.

Key speakers included Associate Professor David Clifton of Oxford University, Professor Du Xin of Anzhen Hospital, and Dr. Gao Pei of the School of Public Health at Peking University, who shared their experiences with the application of big data across the fields of biomedical engineering, clinical trials and epidemiology, respectively. They communicated about how different types of medical data could be used in medical research to improve patient outcomes.

Other experts discussed in depth, about resource sharing and interconnection of big data. Dr. Maoyi Tian, Senior Research Fellow at The George Institute, China said: “This workshop provides experts and scholars in different fields and institutions with a platform for sharing information and resources. We have a lot to work within various sections for healthcare that we can draw upon to provide evidence about effectiveness, risk and quality parameters that are relevant to shaping health policy and building effective health systems.”
